The Chinese confronted Great Britain over importing opium into China. During the 19th century, opium became an extremely popular drug in Chinese society. At one point, roughly 12 million people were addicted to opium. The Chinese government was upset with the British over this epidemic, as they continued to trade it with Chinese merchants. This conflict ultimately lead to the Opium Wars, in which the British defeated the Chinese.
