People write letters to each other to keep in communication.
People write journals to document what happened during the day.
People write diaries to write personal feelings and thoughts. 
Some people don't have anyone or feel as if they don't have anyone to talk to. So, they write their feelings down. Others might keep a journal to remember something that they did. Or maybe it's to be able to look back on the past when they get older. Hope this helps!
