If f(x) = x^3 + 7x^2 – x and g(x) = x^2 – 3, what is the degree of g(f(x))?

Here we are using f(x) as the INPUT to g(x).  

Thus, g( f(x) ) = [x^3 + 7x^2 - x]^2 - 3.  Focus on (x^3)^2.  That comes out to x^6.  The degree of g( f(x) ) is thus 6.
