The Chinese Exclusion Act was passed in 1882. It was a United States Federal Law signed by the then-president Chester A. Arthur and imposed restrictions on the free immigration of Chinese laborers, specifically prohibiting them from coming into the United States. It was then turned into a suspension, but stayed in tact until 1943 and was the first law enacted which stopped a specific ethnic group from entering the country.
