pH refers to the alkalinity or acidity of a particular solution, it measures the concentration of hydrogen ion in that solution. Water is a mixture of two ions, hydroxide ion and hydrogen ion. Hydrogen ions are produced when there is dissociation of water. Thus, there is an indirect relationship between the pH of an aqueous solution and the dissociation of water, that is, measuring pH is equivalent to measuring the degree of dissociation of water.
