How does the author’s use of a third-person point of view impact the plot?

Answer:

Third-person point of view enables the author to choose what information the reader knows. This is useful to build interest and suspense.

Also, we get to hear many of the characters' thoughts as well as what is actually happening. This allows readers to better understand what kind of character they are, along with their motivations, goals, which may or may not change the plot slightly. We will not be able to do this in a first person point of view.
