Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darken our skin?

The sun bleaches and destroys the melanin in your hair making your hair lighter. The skin cells on the other hand are alive and can adapt to UV rays when the sun hits the skin. Causing the skin to produce more melanin for additional protection.. Hope that helps you :)
